BIM, information and openBIM

Distinguish an information-management method from simple 3D use, then place openBIM within that chain.

By the end of this module
  • Explain BIM without reducing it to software
  • Connect data to the asset life cycle
  • Identify what open standards enable — and what they do not guarantee
01

The purpose

ISO 19650 places the exchange, recording, versioning and organisation of information at the centre of the process throughout the asset life cycle.

02

The open approach

openBIM relies on interoperable standards and services. An open format facilitates exchange, but it does not replace project requirements or quality control.

03

The right reflex

Start with the intended use of information, then define the data, checks and responsibilities required. Geometry serves that use.

Method

A score matters only if you can justify the answer.

  1. 01
    Read

A short module focused on one problem.

  2. 02
    Answer

Choose an answer, then read the explanation even when you were correct.

  3. 03
    Verify

Open the primary source and check the cited edition.

  4. 04
    Apply

Rephrase the concept using an example from your project.
